In September 2010 (14/15th- 28/29th) I am teaming up with
the best Photo Safari company in Kenya - Freeman
Safaris to run a
very special two-week Photo Safari including tuition to
the fabulous Maasai Mara at the best time of year - September,
to coincide with the wildebeest migration. At this time, one
of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles takes place
as millions of wildebeest and zebra run the gauntlet of
snapping crocodiles to cross the Mara river from Tanzania
into Kenya. September is also a great time of year to photograph
young animals - lion, leopard and cheetah cubs and hyena
pups are all a possibility. The predators follow the migratory
animals, so we maximise our chances to witness and hopefully
photograph a lion or cheetah attack. It's not just animals
either, there are many spectacular birds such as Auger buzzards,
secretary birds, fish eagles, vultures, storks, rollers
and a host of other fabulous species to point your lens
at !
Unlike most other tours which are located outside the park,
we will be located in a luxury camp in what must be the
most desirable location in the Maasai Mara National Park.
It is in a forest glade beside a hippo pool. At night you
will be serenaded to sleep by the cicadas and you may hear
nearby lions, leopards, hippos or elephants which contribute
to the true wildlife experience of this safari - but safe
in the knowledge that the camp is guarded at night by six
Massai warriors armed with spears !
You will receive expert tuition and guidance from John Devries
of Ophrys Photography in getting better images from your
digital SLR. For the first week a daily topic will be covered
and John will rotate around the vehicles to assist in the
field as necessary. Tuition for the first week will include
the following :
Camera basics - getting the camera
set up for the situations we will encounter. Settings for
static and action shots, moving autofocus points, Shooting
jpeg and RAW. White balance.
Getting a sharp image - causes of
soft or blurred images. Understanding aperture, shutter
speed and ISO. When to hand hold, long lens techniques.
Keeping digital noise to a minimum
- shooting ‘to the right’
Correct exposure - understanding
and using the histogram, metering system, exposure compensation.
Composition - getting a well composed
image, understanding perspective and the importance of light
in an image.
Getting something different - ‘arty’
images, sunrises, sunsets and backlit subjects
We will also do some post-processing using Photoshop to
help you get the very best out of your images and you will
also learn how to sensibly deal with the large collection
of images that you will inevitably go back home with.
On the second week you
will continue to put into practice what you have learnt
and we will do a daily critique of images. John will be
on hand to advise and go over any other topics you would
like to cover.
I guarantee that you will have the experience of a lifetime
and will return home a better photographer with some sensational
images !
This is the trip of a lifetime
and is limited to a maximum of 12 clients so early booking
is very advisable to avoid disappointment. Spouses
and partners are very welcome.
