Ophrys is greek for "Eyebrow"
and the name is believed to have been given by the Roman naturalist
Pliny the Elder (29-79 AD) who died when Vesuvius erupted.
Legend has it that ophrys species provide a brown dye which
the Romans used to dye their eyebrows and hair. Dont forget
they didn't have Grecian 2000 in those days!
